Civil Union Ceremonies
The Clerk of Essex County performs civil union ceremonies for a suggested donation of $35 at the Hall of Records, located at 465 Dr. Martin Luther King Blvd., Room 247, Newark, NJ 07102.
Civil Union Licenses can be acquired in the Municipal Registrar’s Office in the municipality where either partner resides. If both partners are from out of state, they may apply at the Municipal Registrar’s Office in the municipality where the ceremony will take place.
Both partners and one witness who is 18 years of age or older and knows the couple must appear at the Municipal Registrar’s Office.
Dates must be reserved in advance, no later than 72 hours and no more than 6 months prior to the date of the ceremony. The civil union license is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance.
Some municipalities require proof of residency such as a driver’s license, lease or tax return.
The official who performs the ceremony must file the license with the Municipal Registrar in the Municipality where the ceremony was performed within 5 days of the ceremony.
